Matthew Pines

Matthew Pines is an exciting and experienced young conductor, teacher, and performer. Based in Melbourne, he has worked on projects with James Morrison, Evan Lawson, Xani, Erwan Keravec, Monash Academy Orchestra and Speak Percussion. Since 2024, Matthew has been Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Monash Law String Orchestra. He also works as a musical director and conductor for school musicals, choirs and community theatre. When he isn’t on the podium, Matthew teaches woodwinds at Killester College and performs as a Saxophone DJ for weddings and corporate functions. Beloved by his students, he is a sort after teacher, having been chosen as the saxophone and musical theatre tutor for NSW State Music camp multiple times and as a tutor for the Northern Rivers Youth Orchestra.

Matthew is a versatile saxophone player, having studied contemporary, jazz, and classical saxophone at Southern Cross University under Martha Baartz and Monash University under Yo-yo Su. He is also a skilled arranger and project designer, completing studies in arranging and game design at Berklee Online. Matthew has performed at the Sydney Opera House, Melbourne Zoo, Bunjil Place, Alexander Theatre, Lismore City Hall, and Qudos Bank Arena.  

Matthew is passionate about expanding access to quality community and school music programs in Australia.
